GIVING BACK

HOT SHOWERS

Imagine that you have nowhere to call home…

How long do you think you could go without a hot shower? That question got me thinking…

What would it take to have a free, publicly accessible, hot shower available in every community in Australia?

Why This Initiative Exists

Hot Showers Matter

Australia is facing a severe housing crisis, and homelessness is rising. Many services already provide food, clothing and even mobile laundries – but reliable access to a hot shower is still missing in most places.

Without a hot shower, it’s harder to maintain dignity and self‑worth, stay connected with family, friends and community, and present well for work, appointments and housing opportunities.

Everyone deserves the health, dignity and acceptance that come with being clean.

What this Initiative Does

What I’m Building

This initiative helps local communities design their own local solutions – there’s no single model.
In different places, this might mean:

  • Opening an existing community asset – such as a pool, a gym or a community centre – for wider shower access
  • Retrofitting a shower into a cubicle in an existing amenities block
  • Adding a pre‑built shower unit to a public building or facility

Some options need funding. Others need mainly coordination, goodwill and a decision to act.

My Vision: A free, publicly accessible, hot shower in every community in Australia.

Why Get Involved

Who Benefits – and Why It Matters

The primary beneficiaries of this initiative are people experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity – such as people sleeping rough, families living in cars, and people escaping violence.

Others who would also benefit include:

  • Joggers, walkers and local sportspeople
  • Travellers and grey nomads
  • People with continence challenges
  • Parents and carers of young children
  • Emergency responders and people displaced by disasters

Communities make a practical and meaningful difference for people experiencing homelessness, strengthening social cohesion and supporting people to re‑engage and contribute.

This issue can touch any of us, and working together to provide hot showers is a relatively small but powerful step we can all take to change someone’s life.
