FREE CONSULTANCY VOUCHERS FROM BENEFOLK
You may have seen that the good people at Benefolk recently launched the BENEFOLK EXPERT BAR – think of this new initiative as being like telehealth for the social sector.
That means you can head online, find one of their pre-vetted experts (including yours-truly) and book in an online session with them to get the advice and support your NFP needs.
How good is that!
And for a short time only, they also have some pre-paid vouchers available for certain organisations…so eligible organisations won’t even have to pay for a session of this amazing support themself – even better!
(These initial pre-paid sessions are currently available for Victorian NFP organisations working in certain cause areas – fingers crossed more will be available soon for NFPs in other states).
So if this is what your organisation needs, and you think you might fit the criteria for a free voucher, click HERE to complete your application and talk to one of our experts on EXPERT BAR.
MY LATEST BLOG
This week I’m kicking off a new short Blog series: What’s important and why.
In this series I’ll be exploring some of the headline issues a NFP Board or Committee member needs to be across in order to effectively fulfil their duties to the organisation/s they serve, and why these things are so important to get right.
In this first article I explore Good Governance, and I unpack – from a number of angles – why it matters to do it properly.
Check out the article HERE and I do hope you find it helpful for the NFP organisations you are a part of.
And if you want to read more of my blog articles, or listen to some podcasts I have spoken on, or even watch some of my past webinars, then check out my back catalogue of Blogs & Pods HERE.
Enjoy!

FINANCE TIPS FROM JULIE
Julie Doyle is my business finances guru, and this week she is generously sharing some of her wisdom around Monitoring Program-related Expenses.
This week Julie says:
We’ve worked our way through your income opportunities as a not-for-profit and, with the possibility you may be looking at your calendar year 2024 budgets, I will now take a deep dive into the Expenses side of your NFP and what you should be looking out for over the coming newsletters.
NFPs, like any other entity, have to carefully manage their expenses to ensure ongoing financial sustainability while, at the same time, fulfilling their mission.
To begin with we look into Program-related expenses – these can include supplies and materials directly related to the Program, event costs and training and professional development for stakeholders.
Program-related expenses directly support your organisation’s overall mission and, by monitoring these expenses regularly, you can ensure that you are effectively using resources to create impact and fulfill your core objectives. Proper allocation ensures the most important Programs receive adequate funding.
Donors, grant-makers, and stakeholders expect transparency about how your funds are being spent. Regularly monitoring your Program-related expenses helps to demonstrate that you are using your resources efficiently and ethically. This builds trust with supporters and can increase future donations or grants.
By analysing your Program-related expenses, you can assess whether funds are being used in the most efficient way. It allows you to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of your different Programs and reallocate resources to maximise the impact of your mission. If a Program is not yielding expected outcomes, through your diligent monitoring, you are in the best position to make adjustments to better meet those outcomes.
Monitoring Program-related expenses helps ensure your organisation remains financially healthy. Over-investing in one program or running programs inefficiently could drain your resources pretty quickly, risking your sustainability. Careful tracking allows for adjustments to maintain a balance between your Programs and your operational needs.
Many NFPs are required to report how much of their funding is spent on Programs versus Administrative or Fundraising activities. Monitoring Program-related expenses ensures fulfilment with various compliance requirements and helps avoid any questions around transparency.
Regular tracking and evaluation of Program expenses help you optimise your financial resources, build credibility, and ensure long-term sustainability while staying focused on your mission.
If you have a NFP finance query you would like Julie to talk about via my Good Governance Newsletter, just email it to me on megan@mjbconsulting.net.au.
