CA CONNECTIONS RETURNS FOR 2025

If you haven’t heard of it before, CA Connections (which I often refer to as ‘Speed Dating for NFPs’) is a fabulous event – hosted by the wonderful people at Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ) – which connects CAANZ members (from across Australia) who are wanting to contribute through NFP governance roles, with NFPs that are looking for skills-based directors.

I have referred a number of NFPs to these events in the past, and those organisations who have attended have come away with good leads for quality new Board members.

Since the emergence of COVID, these events have gone online, which opens up a whole new range of options to connect with potential Board members digitally – I know myself that the increased availability to meet online has enabled me to contribute as a Board member to NFP organisations further afield than ever before. And it’s not all about being remote – plenty of NFPs have found CAs in their local areas to join their Boards too!

So if this sounds like something your NFP could benefit from, the next online CA Connections event has been scheduled for Tuesday 18 March from 6.00-7.30 pm (AEDT/Melbourne time).

Check out the full details on the information flyer HERE.

If your NFP would like to send a representative along to attend and present on behalf of your organisation, then book your place ASAP by contacting the team from CAANZ, on connections@charteredaccountantsanz.com now!

I hope your NFP can take advantage of this great opportunity to connect with potential Board members too!

MY LATEST BLOG

This week I’m sharing the final installation in my Blog series: What’s important and why.

In this series I’ve explored a range of headline issues a NFP Board or Committee member needs to be across in order to effectively fulfil their duties to the organisation/s they serve, and why these things are so important to get right.

In this last article I explore Setting the Strategy, and I unpack – from a number of angles – why it matters to do it properly.

Check out the article HERE and I do hope you find it helpful for the NFP organisations you are a part of.

And if you want to read more of my blog articles, or listen to some podcasts I have spoken on, or even watch some of my past webinars, then check out my back catalogue of Blogs & Pods HERE.

FINANCE TIPS FROM JULIE

Julie Doyle is my business finances guru, and this week she is generously sharing some of her wisdom around Legal and Compliance Costs Part 3.

This week Julie says:

This is the final article in the Legal and Compliance Costs series, and today we are exploring some specific costs that will vary, depending for your NFP, on several factors, including the size of your organisation, the complexity of your activities, the jurisdiction in which you may operate, and the specific requirements you need to meet.

These costs generally involve ensuring that your entity is adhering to all applicable laws and regulations in place in your jurisdiction/s, as well as maintaining good internal governance.

Intellectual Property Compliance – If your NFP develops original content, programs, or inventions, it may need legal services related to intellectual property, such as copyright, trademark, or patent filings. These services can be expensive depending on the complexity of the intellectual property involved.

Data Protection and Privacy Compliance – With increasing focus on our data privacy (such as the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner), NFPs must ensure that they comply with data protection laws when handling personal information. This could involve legal costs to review privacy policies, secure data practices, and train staff.

Audits and Legal Disputes – If your NFP undergoes an audit, there may be additional legal and accounting costs involved in ensuring compliance with accounting standards. Additionally, you might face legal disputes (such as employment disputes, contract disputes, or disputes over governance). Legal fees for handling these situations can be significant.

So, as we end this review focusing on the Legal and Compliance Costs for NFPs, we can see that costs can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars annually, depending on the complexity and scope of your entity’s activities.

However, ensuring compliance with tax laws, governance standards, fundraising regulations, and other legal requirements is crucial to the proper management of any NFP, and entities will find it critical to budget for these costs in order to avoid potential penalties, fines, or the loss of tax-exempt status.

If you have a NFP finance query you would like Julie to talk about via my Good Governance Newsletter, just email it to me on megan@mjbconsulting.net.au.
