GREAT GUIDES FOR RUNNING YOUR NFP!

Not For Profit Law – a branch of Justice Connect – produces a number of great resources for NFPs to help them navigate a multitude of legislative and compliance requirements.

Probably their most frequently-used publications though are their series of guides to running organisations.

From Incorporated Associations in Victoria and New South Wales to Companies Limited by Guarantee (both charitable and non-charitable) across the country, these guides are my ‘bibles’ to ensuring compliance with incorporation law!
(And if your jurisdiction isn’t included, just google and you are bound to find your equivalent too).

I hope you find these guides as helpful as I do!

FINANCE TIPS FROM JULIE

Julie Doyle is my business finances guru, and this week she is generously sharing some of her wisdom around Tracking and Controlling Public Relations Expenses.

This week Julie says:

Managing public relations for your not-for-profit, while controlling costs, should be approached strategically.

Here are some cost-effective ways to make the most out of your public relations dollar:

1. Utilise Social Media: Leverage platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, X and Instagram to share stories, updates, and engage with your audience directly. It’s very cost-effective and gives you the potential to reach a really wide audience.

2. Content Marketing: Create valuable content such as blogs, articles, or videos that highlight your organisation’s mission, impact stories, and upcoming events. This can then be easily shared with your audience on your website, via social media, and through your email newsletters.

3. Partnerships and Collaborations: Forge partnerships with other NFP entities, influencers, or businesses that align with your mission. Collaborative efforts can expand your reach without extensive financial investment.

4. Press Releases: Write and distribute press releases to local media outlets. Many news companies are interested in covering stories about community initiatives and events.

5. Email Newsletters: Regularly send out newsletters to your supporters and subscribers. Highlight achievements, upcoming events, and ways they can get involved or donate to your cause.

6. Volunteer Ambassadors: Empower volunteers and supporters to be ambassadors for your entity. Encourage them to share your messages within their own networks and communities.

7. SEO and Online Presence: Optimise your website and content for search engines (Search Engine Optimisation). This helps potential supporters find your NFP when searching online for related topics.

8. Events and Community Engagement: Host virtual or low-cost events, workshops, or community forums to engage with stakeholders and raise awareness about your organisation.

9. Utilise Other Free Resources: Take advantage of free platforms and resources for NFPs, such as Google for Non-profits, which offers free advertising and other tools.

By focusing on strategies like these, you can effectively manage public relations for your NFP while still keeping costs under control.

If you have a NFP finance query you would like Julie to talk about via my Good Governance Newsletter, just email it to me on megan@mjbconsulting.net.au.
